Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice in which the laws of both Heave (astronomy) and Earth (geography) are used to help improve one’s life by receiving positive Chi (energy flow.) The term feng shui literally translates to “wind water.” Feng shui is not only practiced by the Chinese, but also by many Westerners. It’s used not only to create a peaceful atmosphere in homes, but also for healing purposes and as a guide for many businesses. According to Wikipedia, “in 2005, even Disney acknowledged feng shui as an important part of Chinese culture by shifting the main gate to Hong Kong Disneyland by twelve degrees in their building plans, among other actions suggested by the master planner of architecture and design.”

The practice of feng shui is multi-faceted. There are many different feng shui schools and feng shui clubs throughout the world. In general, feng shui is concerned with understanding the relationship between nature and ourselves and placement of objects, so that we may live in harmony within our environment. It proposes the very sensible idea that living with rather than against nature benefits both humans and our environment. Practitioners of feng shui also strongly believe that our lives are deeply affected by our physical environment. If we surround ourselves with beauty in all its’ forms, including art, music, flowers, fountains and other items that reflect the gentleness and spirit of nature, we also will embody ourselves as well as our homes and offices.

Learning the basics of feng shui can be done by anyone. However, it can be a complicated process, depending on how deeply one wants to go into the practice. That’s why some people hire “masters” of feng shui whose understanding of the five elements and energy flow are so great that they use their gift to detect “good” and “bad” energy in buildings and landscapes. These masters for hire will tell you where bathrooms should go, which way doorways should face, where mirrors should be hung, which direction the head of the bed should face - even what color flowers should be placed in certain rooms. They decide these things based on their feeling for the flow of Chi.
