Learning feng shui can be complicated because it’s an intuitive art. The basics are fairly easily understood, but actual feng shui decorators and designers claim they can “feel” positive energy, or chi, which helps them incorporate the principles. Thus, this is the reason why many Chinese business owners hire a Feng Shui Master to help design a layout for their business property or home. It’s not something that is easily learned from a book. To become a master could take years.

Two of the main tools used in feng shui are the compass and the ba-gua. The ba-gua is an octagonal grid that contains the symbols of the I Ching, which is the ancient oracle on which feng shui is based. One must know the ba-gua of one’s home in order to know which areas of the residence corresponds to specific areas of one’s life. Remember: everything in feng shui is related to everything else. There are some complex rules of feng shui, but some are quite simple and use common sense. Examples include: ceilings should be high and well-lit, round pillars are better than square, your home should not be built at the end of a dead-end road, the kitchen door should not face the stove, because a person cooking may instinctively tend to glance back at the door and this could cause an accident.

Other common principles of feng shui include:
Clean out clutter. In feng shui, it’s important that positive energy flow freely. Creating more open space allows good flow of energy. Especially make sure there are no obstacles as you enter the room, as it will obstruct smooth flow of energy throughout the room.

Generally observe your surroundings and follow the rules of nature. As feng shui deals with wind and water, use means to harness this energy.

Have good quality light and air in your home. These two elements are essential for good feng shui. Open windows as often as possible, bring air-purifying plants into your home, use an air-purifier. Allow as much natural light as possible in and consider using full-spectrum lights.

Arrange your room in a way that you can always see anyone entering the room. If not possible to do this, place a mirror opposite the door so that you can see whoever enters the room.

Use a Bagua map. Once you define the different areas of your home, you’ll know which are connected to certain areas of your life. Decorate accordingly. Example: in the northeast romance and love corner of your home, if you desire more love in your life, you might place a heart-shaped bowl or box. Use something red or pink and place something in pairs in this area, such as a pair of candlesticks.

Study the feng shui elements to help balance these five elements in your home. For example, if you are working on attracting more prosperity, you will introduce the feng shui elements of Wood and Water in the Southeast area of your home. It‘s also good to have a strong wood element in your home, as wood feeds the fire in the relationship of the five feng shui elements.
